This edited collection is based on the 2020 symposium 'Opetuksen ja oppimisen ytimessä [At the heart of teaching and learning]', which was collaboratively organized by the Finnish Subject Didactic Research Association and Tampere University Faculty of Education and Culture.

Coursebook authors on the role of literature in developing intercultural competence
In this paper, I describe an interview study with three Finnish coursebook authors. The study aimed to understand how the authors viewed literature, intercultural competence, and the role of literature in developing students' intercultural competence.

This paper describes an interview study conducted with Finnish general upper secondary school English as a Foreign Language teachers. The study aimed to establish an understanding of the kinds of meanings teachers associated with literature in their language teaching practice.

Selection, frequency, and functions of literary texts in Finnish general upper-secondary EFL education
In this article, I describe a survey study I conducted with Finnish general upper secondary school English as a Foreign Language teachers. The aim of the study was to understand how these teachers select literary texts to use in their teaching, how often literary texts are used, and what kinds of factors influence text selections.
